The ECOWAS Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU) and the ECOWAS Water Resources Management Centre (CGRE) are bringing together experts from ECOWAS Member States, the Commission and ECOWAS agencies, technical and financial partners on 31 March and 1 April 2026 in Dakar (SENEGAL) for the launch workshop of the study on new multi-purpose dams for regional integration and climate change adaptation.
The main objective of this study is to identify potential and priority sites for the construction of transboundary dams, in order to establish a sound technical basis for guiding future investments in regional water resources management.
The meeting was attended by representatives of ECOWAS Member States, basin organisations (OMVS, OMVG, ABV, ABN, ABM), ECOWAS agencies (PPDU, CGRE, CCDG), the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), as well as the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), which is contributing to the funding of the study.
The welcome address was delivered, on behalf of the ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, by Mr Kebba FYE, Director of the PPDU.
The proceedings were opened on Tuesday 31 March 2026 by Dr Bakary FATY, Director of Water Resources Management and Planning, representing His Excellency the Minister of Water and Sanitation of the Republic of Senegal.
